Internet users are still reeling over the age-old ‘I Can Has Cheezburger’ meme and it has become more popular now than ever before.

Avid social media users have documented their cats’ love for cheeseburgers. Posts on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Reddit are all teeming with videos and pictures of our feline friends savouring a bite or a lick from their hooman’s burger.

What is the ‘I Can Has Cheezburger’ meme?

While there are many renditions of it now, the classic version of the meme featured a smiling British Shorthair and a superimposed text in the picture that read: ‘I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER?’

As per Know Your Meme, the earliest known version of the cat’s image on the web came from a Russian cat food company called Happy Cat.

The Happy Cat template became so popular over the years that it was used in many other memes. However, the ‘Has Cheezburger’ meme has got a life of its own.

A look at the meme’s origin

Know Your Meme notes that the Happy Cat meme began after the image of a cat with the text was put up on the Something Awful forums in 2003 by the user, FancyCat.

The identity of the feline remains conflicted, with some saying it’s a British shorthair named Frank who was born in 1994 and passed away in 2007, while others claim it’s Misha and was born in 2003.

Randy Meeks, the only member of the gang to survive the first Scream film alongside Sidney, makes it to college in Scream 2. While he meets an unfortunate end in a van parked on campus, Randy does have a enough time to wax poetic about horror movies during his pre-death screen time.

One of his biggest blabbering episodes involves listing off the ways in which people die in horror films, and this meme is a parody of that. The mad slasher trope comes to life with these sequences, and it almost seems like many of these moments in the Scream universe are throwbacks to Jack Nicholson's infamous "Here's Johnny!" moment in The Shining. Regardless of where the influence comes from, Ghostface made the monster behind the door a mainstream horror construct.
